Phase V Construction – An Up-To-Date History

 see the Master Plan drawing

The project got off to a disappointing start as the target launch date was missed.  Our excavating contractor was delayed due to weather and site conditions at their previous job site.  The good news is the project is now in motion.  Below is a synopsis of all activities:

Day 27 – August 8, 2016

Work continues on the retaining wall and the turf.  The base for the retaining wall is installed and the first row of blocks is set in place.  The edges of the turf are secured.  The east, south and north edges are buried in the trenches.  The west edge is attached to Field 3.  Glue is added to a wide strip of adhesive tape.  This “double sticky” strip is then placed under the seam between the two fields to secure the attachment.  While this is going on the rubber crumb infill begins.

Day 25 & 26 – August 6 & 7, 2016

Work continues on the turf.  The preparations are made to secure the edges.

Day 24 – August 5, 2016

Work is completed on the north end stairs and starts up again on the new retaining wall.  The red breeze is filled in and the river rock put back in place.  Then comes time to roll out the final section of turf.  Each one is always rolled out upside down on top of the previous section and then sewn together.  Then the crew grabs the edge of the section and flips it into place.   A pull here…a tug there…and the turf roll out is complete!

Day 12 – July 21, 2016

The west warm up pad is completed and blocks for the new retaining walls are delivered.

Day 11 – July 20, 2016

The pad is complete with the exception of the south end where construction was temporarily halted due to the “ponding” of water in the southwest corner from the previous night’s rain.  On the bright side it appears that the drainage grade is perfect!  That being the case construction focus turned to the east warm up pad.  This was completed and the west warm up pad started.

Day 9 & 10 – July 18 & 19 2016

The construction of the pad moves into the south end where the berm was dug out.  The construction of the east warm up pad also continues but only as a filler task.

Day 8 – July 15, 2016

The construction of the pad continues…spreading the base material, laser grading, rolling, watering…then repeat.  Also, removal of vegetation for the new warm up areas has begun.

Day 7 – July 14, 2016

The construction of the base pad continues.  In addition, as you know, the new mandates from US Soccer are what drove the kickoff for the construction of Field 4.  The new field will actually serve as 2 fields for the new 9v9 format and if needed, 4 fields for the new 7v7 format.  In order to accommodate these dimensions, Field 4 will be much bigger than in the original master plan.  This requires the excavation into the south berm past the existing retaining walls.

Day 6 – July 13, 2016

Delivery of base material continues as does the installation of the pad.

Day 5 – July 12, 2016

Material for the base pad has been delivered.  For Field 4 we will be using recycled concrete at the recommendation of our turf supplier.  In the past we have used a combination of red and white breeze (the same material used in the seating areas) for the pad.  As time goes on we have seen an improvement in the actual turf product.  So too has the preferred base.  The recycled concrete offers a more stable base and is less expensive.

Day 2 – July 7, 2016

The actual grading of Field 4 begins.  It’s done with the help of a laser.  The laser sits atop a tripod and spins at a high speed.  The blade of the grader has a terminal that receives data from the laser which positions the blade at the desired level for each pass up and down the field area.

Day 1 – July 6, 2016

The first task was to remove the existing turf that has served the complex as a “warm up” area for games and small space area for training.  Next the vegetation was removed from the remainder of the space that will be Field 4.

Construction activity continues at the complex.  This project, collectively known as Phase IV, will consist of building retaining walls in order to accommodate tiered seating and improvements to the drainage system.  The viewing berms are being terraced so you can bring your chairs and sit at a level of your choosing.  Everyone keep your fingers crossed for good weather.  We plan to have the new “stadium look” completed by the start of the Spring Season.
